Noel Neill and George ReevesI just got back from spending the holidays at my Grandma and Grandpa’s house. (Thanks for the sweater and the gift card, Grandma and Grandpa, if you’re reading this by the way!) I had a good time but the visit really made me appreciate how lucky I am to be born when I was, which is a good thing I guess. I have access to modern conveniences my grandparents never dreamed of when they were my age, not to mention the science fiction is better – and better looking!

I got some Smallville DVDs for Christmas and was showing them to my Grandpa and he said he used to watch Superman on TV too. Then later he actually found the show he watched running on some cable channel that I always skip over because they’re usually showing cooking shows or old-timey music.

It was called The Adventures of Superman and I guess, like Smallville is about the young Superman, this is about Superman when he’s really old. Which is okay – old people need heroes too – but for someone who’s used to seeing Tom Welling, this Superman was kind of a disappointment. Even the guy from the movie last summer is better looking than George Reeves. I mean no offense to Mr. Reeves who was probably a very nice man, but he kind of looked like a high school principal, which might be a compliment if you ARE a high school principal but not really if you’re the last son of Krypton. And he wears glasses like my grandpa. I wonder if his breath smelled like scotch too.

The other thing that was weird was that none of the bad guys he fought even had any super powers. Not one of them could turn invisible or burrow through the ground or astral project. They’re all just regular criminals who rob banks and stuff. Bo-ring! Seems like a waste of a perfectly good superhero to go after guys the regular cops could get.

Anyway, here are all the actors I’ve seen play Clark Kent. Notice that I’m not comparing Supermans because Tom Welling hasn’t played Superman yet, he’s only played Clark Kent, so it wouldn’t be fair.

George Reeves - Grampa's Superman George Reeves – The Adventures of Superman (1952 – 1958)
See, he looks like he’s calling somebody’s parents to tell them their kid is in trouble for pretend throwing-up all over some other kid’s lunch tray. To be fair, in the TV show he didn’t usually have such a mean-looking face. But he did wear a pretty dorky hat so it all evens out.
Christopher Reeve - Mom & Dad's Superman Christopher Reeve – The Superman movies (1978 – 1987)
He’s not actually related to George Reeves even though their names are kind of similar. He’s pretty handsome for a guy from the 1970s, but those glasses are not very flattering and he played Clark so clumsy and awkward. What’s up with that?
Dean Cain - Older cousin's Superman Dean Cain –Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993 – 1997)
Dean is cute but in a preppy kind of way. He’s probably my second favorite Clark of all time. He should totally do a Smallville episode playing Clark’s big brother or something! Except Clark doesn’t have a big brother but they could make one up for the show, like they made up Lois Lane and Jimmy Olson hanging around in Smallville.
Tom Welling - My Superman!!! Tom Welling – Smallville (2001 – forever I hope!)
Even in glasses, Tom is the prettiest of all the Clarks. This is a fact. Plus he gets to wear t-shirts and jeans instead of a suit and tie or a Superman costume so he looks more like a real person. He doesn’t normally wear glasses, I guess so we can see his dreamy eyes! But I don’t understand how Lois, Lex and Jimmy Olsen aren’t going to recognize him when he goes to Metropolis to be Superman, since they’ve seen him plenty of times without his glasses when they visited Smallville.
Brandon Routh - My alternate Superman Brandon Routh – Superman Returns (2006)
This movie is supposed to take place after the first two Christopher Reeve movies, so Brandon’s Clark is kind of nerdy too. But at least it’s 21st century nerdy instead of 1970s nerdy, which makes a difference.

I hope they stop casting new Supermans pretty soon because this is getting confusing!

That’s all for this time. See you soon with more sci-fi goodness!

YFF, Cindy
