Are the Lost Castaway on Bomano Island?

The New People was a very short lived ABC television series which aired from September 22, 1969 to January 12, 1970 and almost nobody remembers. The episodes were 45 minutes in length, followed by another 45 minute program (a musical variety show). Since it had such an odd format it was never syndicated.

Created by Rod Serling, The New People was an Aaron Spelling production about a band of young college students who, on their way home from a goodwill tour to South East Asia, crashed on a mysterious deserted South Pacific island named Bomao. The island was complete with buildings, cars, provisions, and eerie test-dummy mannequins.

While Serling's vision of the show as a social commentary of the times, it has some eerie coincidences (although no where as eerie as Gilligan's Island) to Lost.

There seems to be "others" on the island, the island was used for experimentation, and it has a cache of guns to keep things interesting.

This series was not to be meant as science fiction, but with Twilight Zone's Rod Serling at the helm, could a smoke monster been far behind?

Some Interesting Episodes from The New People episode guide.

Panic in the Sand. The outbreak of a mysterious epidemic raises a point in medical ethics: who will be guinea pigs for a chemical that may cure -- or cause -- the malady? The sickness?

Murderer. The specter of murder haunts the New People when a youth is found dead at the foot of a cliff. Not that they lack a suspect: enigmatic Dan Stoner had both opportunity and motive. But how should they handle the tragedy? The Lost Island is full of murderers and deaths, so I guess the Losties have found a way to handle it.

Lifeline. Several youths decide to leave the island by raft. A near-suicidal scheme to start with, the plan is further endangered by the inclusion of Christine Miller, a neurotic. Building a raft never works, just ask Michael or Gilligan.

Marriage, Bomano Style. Cara is victimized by her own guilt when she becomes pregnant with the island's first baby. Sun is going through the same thing now.

Is This Any Way To Run An Island? The laws of the new people's society fall apart and everyone splits to various parts of the island to do their own thing. A similar split happened first season on Lost.

Dark Side of the Island. The discovery of a shallow grave gives rise to fears that someone -- or something -- may inhabit the unexplored side of the island. The fear mushrooms into near hysteria when one of the girls disappears. The Monster? The Others?

Speed Kills. Terror from within. Succumbing to Island Fever, a normally happy-go-lucky guy erupts in murderous paranoiac outbursts aimed at George. The Losties too have all experience Island Madness!

The Guns of Bomano. After finding a cache of guns, the election of an armed peace officer brings to the island the old issues of law and order, gun control and the role of police in society. Apparently, all deserted Islands have gun caches.

On the Horizon. The appearance of a distant fishing trawler raises the exciting hope of being rescued -- if the New People can agree that they want to signal the ship. Don't signal it! Just don't do it!!!!
