Gilligan’s Island Lost Theory

It is our theory that the Lost Island and Gilligan’s Island are one and the same. That, or the producers of Lost are just ripping off Gilligan’s Island scripts. Sherwood Schwartz must be turning over in his grave, (if he were dead*).

The Lost producers even seemed to cast the same characters, but had to split them into multiple people due to the fact that Mr. Schwartz' castaways are so multi-dimensional. For example, no one man today could possess the intelligence of Professor Roy Hinckley, a true Renaissance Man, so he is re-imagined as Jack, Sayid and Michael. Here's how the castaways are integrated into Lost:

Skipper – Locke/Mister Eko/Ana-Lucia
Professor – Jack/Sayid/Michael
Mr. Howell – Boone/Jin/Bernard
Mrs. Howell – Shannon/Sun/Rose
Ginger – Sawyer/Kate
Mary Ann – Clair/Libby
Gilligan – Charlie/Hurley/Arzt

Even Guest Stars Seem Familiar:
Wrongway Feldman - Pilot of Flight 815
Erika (Zsa Zsa Gabor) - French woman
Jungle Boy - Alex
Tongo the Ape Man - Zeke (Bearded Man)
Big-game hunter Jonathan Kincaid -The Others
Kidnapper (Don Rickles) - Ethan
Cosmonauts - Desmond/Nathan
Giant Spider - The Black Smoke
The Mosquitoes (music group) - Drive Shaft

*According to the recently obtained birth certificate of Sherwood Schwartz, he was born in 1806 and is nearly 200 years old! Perhaps he has visited the Island that he writes about and is privy to life-extension technology! Could Sherwood Schwartz and Alvar Hanso be one and the same? Are Mr. Schwartz' TV programs some sort of horrible mind-altering experiment? It would explain the success of the Brady Bunch.

Other similarities:

Just as items from the Fusies past mysteriously are found in the hatch (Kate's music box, Clair's boyfriend's art), items from the castaway’s past mysteriously manifest themselves on the island. They were only out for a three-hour tour, yet evening gowns and trunks of money seemingly come out of nowhere.

Like the polar bear, animals not native to the Island appear and threaten the lives of our castaways, including a lion, a gorilla, a giant spider and a chimpanzee (animals all native to Africa, a Nigerian connection perhaps?).

Like Locke, Gilligan seems to have a strange connection to the Island. The Island controls Gilligan and uses him to thwart any rescue attempt. In exchange, Gilligan is given special powers from time to time, including super strength, ESP and invisibility.

Like Hurley, Gilligan is the winner of a sweepstakes. Is this the start of his "bad luck?"

The castaways are also threatened by “Others”: natives from nearby islands, a jungle boy, a jungle man, a South American dictator, a spy, a Beatles cover band, cosmonauts, Zsa Zsa Gabor, evil twins, a surfer dude, a Hollywood producer, a butterfly collector and not one but two mad scientists.

Like on Lost, strange objects are drawn to the island: radioactive seeds, a missile, a jet pack, a meteor, a space capsule, a killer robot and a satellite, just to name a few.

Like on Lost, the Island causes the castaways to have strange prophetic dreams. (i.e. Gilligan as a sheriff, vampire and cannibal.)

Mary Ann, like Clair, gets amnesia.

Like the Lost passengers, the crew of the Minnow is declared dead and the search for them is called off.

As proof, I offer you the following Gilligan’s Island episode guide. The similarities are simply eerie!

Two on a Raft - The Castaways find themselves marooned on the island. Gilligan and the Skipper set sail on a home-made raft in an attempt to find help. After sailing for days and battling obstacles such as sharks, they land back on Gilligan's Island without realizing it. When they see signs of life on the island, they assume it's unfriendly natives. When the rest of the castaways realize there are visitors on the island, they also assume the visitors are unfriendly natives. Hmm, sounds like the relationship between the fusies and the tailies to me. And are the “Others” on Lost just misunderstood? Update: Desmond tries to sail away from the Island, only to end up back in the same place.

Voodoo Something to Me - The Skipper fears that the island is full of 'voodoo' when he thinks that Gilligan has been turned into a monkey. Could be voodoo on Lost, hadn’t thought of that theory! Also, it is in this episode we discover that the Skipper, like Locke, is a man of faith and the professor, like Jack, is a man of science.

Wrongway Feldman - When Gilligan finds an old airplane hidden in the jungle, the Castaways discover a long-forgotten aviator living on the island. Could the pilot of flight 815 be the son of Wrongway Feldman? Or the father of the Nigerian pilot? Or Desmond? Or anyone who gets Lost easily?

President Gilligan - The castaways decide that they need someone to be the leader on the island, and so they hold elections. As you might imagine, both Mr. Howell and the Skipper imagine themselves to be the natural choice to lead the Castaways in their island society. However, when the votes are counted, Gilligan is elected president of the island!
I predict Hurley will make a grab for power the same way! UPDATE: I was wrong, it was Sawyer who played The Skpper, er I mean, Jack and Locke against each other.

Waiting for Watubi - While digging, the Skipper uncovers a carved statue of a Tiki God. He then believes a curse has fallen on him for disturbing the resting-place of Watubi, and that his days are numbered. Similar to the Voodoo theory, but I wouldn't put it past the Lost producers to go all Brady-Bunch-curse on the Fusies!

Birds Gotta Fly, Fish Gotta Talk - During Christmas, the Castaways get homesick and share their memories of the first day they were shipwrecked. Sherwood Schwartz invented Island Flashbacks! Keep an eye open in this episode; if you look quickly you'll see footage from the first unaired pilot that had a different Professor, Ginger and Mary Ann, but now I wonder; could these be "the others" of Gilligan's Island?

Water, Water Everywhere - Talk about a painful irony: though surrounded by water, the Castaways suddenly discover that their supply of fresh drinking water is running out. Turns out there’s water in a cave in the jungle. Hmmm.

So Sorry, My Island Now - The Castaways are captured by a Japanese sailor who thinks that WWII never ended. Rumored Season 3 plot. Also could be Dr. Marvin Candle's father.

Gilligan Meets Jungle Boy - Gilligan discovers a jungle boy living on the island. Mark my words, they will find a jungle boy this season. They'll probably change it to a jungle girl to avoid getting sued by Mr. Schwartz!

St. Gilligan and The Dragon - Angry because the men haven't kept their promise to build them private houses, the women decide to move to the other side of the island in protest. Gilligan and the Skipper dress as a monster in an attempt to frighten the girls and cause them to come running back. Sherwood Schwartz invented the Monster! And is the monster just an invention of Locke to keep the Fusies in line?

Diamonds are an Ape's Best Friend - A gorilla is enchanted by Mrs. Howell's perfume and kidnaps her. Kidnappings are very common on both Islands. Also, gorillas are from Africa, how did this animal get to an island in the South Seas? Even more chilling, rumor has it that it was a polar bear in the first draft of the script!

How to be a Hero - After Gilligan is unable to save Mary Ann from drowning in the lagoon, the Skipper must jump in and rescue both of them. How Charley-like.

New Neighbor Sam - The Castaways overhear voices discussing buried treasure and threatening their lives. The voices turn out to belong to a parrot. Hmmm, whispers in the jungle anyone? Could be a flock of parrots.

Forget Me Not - The Professor tries to cure the Skipper's amnesia by hypnotizing him and taking him through time. Time travel?

Nyet, Nyet - Not Yet - Two Russian Cosmonauts land on the island in their space capsule. Gilligan’s version of the hatch!

The Chain of Command - The Skipper worries that something is going to happen to him, so he begins to train Gilligan to be a leader. Locke trained Michael to shoot in the event he needs to take over, (he probably shouldn't have done that.)

Smile, You're on Mars Camera - A NASA satellite with a TV camera accidentally lands on the island. Look for the satellite to land on the Island next season.

The Sweepstakes - Gilligan has the winning ticket for a South American sweepstakes. Perhaps Lost should have been called "Hurley's Island!" And what was the winning number? I forget, but I'm sure there was an 8, 23 and a 42 in it. Was this the source of Gilligan's cursed life? Nobody could be that clumsy and stupid and become a first mate on a ship to a "skipper brave and sure" if there wasn't some sort of curse going on.

More on the Lost Numbers on Gilligan's Island:

4 - number of sleeping huts on the island
8 - animals not native to the island
15 - things that wash up on shore
16 - number of times Gilligan foils rescue attempts
23 - number things Gilligan drops on the Skippers head
42 - number of people who visit the island

More Gilligan's Island Merchandise

Not Guilty - A crate containing coconuts is wrapped in an old Honolulu newspaper that reads that one of the Castaways is being sought in a murder investigation. Then they realize they all could be suspects in the same crime! The castaways become suspicious of each other and decide to recreate the events of the night before they sailed in order to solve the Randolph Blake murder case. Hmm, all the castaways' past lives are inter-connected and they didn’t even realize it. What are the odds that so many strangers’ lives would intersect in this way?

You've Been Disconnected - A storm washes up a trans-continental telephone cable into the lagoon. Sayid finds a cable in the ocean; could it be the same cable?

Seer Gilligan - Gilligan discovers an island bush that produces seeds which, when eaten, give a person the ability to read the minds of others. ESP! Did Walt eat the same seeds?

Gilligan's Living Doll - An experimental robot launched by the Air Force parachutes onto the island. The monster could be a robot... no wait, it’s black smoke.

Forward March - The Castaways are frightened as the sounds of battle, including hand grenades and machine guns, rock the island. The culprit turns out to be a gorilla who has found an old WWII arsenal cave. Gilligan’s Island also has a cache of weapons, just like on Lost. And like on Lost, the castaways consider forming an army to battle the unseen others. The episode marks the return of the gorilla. I expect the polar bear will also show up again, and this time he’ll be packing.

Ship Ahoax - The Castaways begin to suffer from 'island madness' due to the isolation. The Lost castaways start going bonkers after only a few days. The sickness?

Will the Real Mr. Howell Please Stand Up - The radio reports that Mr. Howell has been rescued and is spending all of his money. Obviously, there is an imposter! Meanwhile, the imposter falls off a luxury liner and ends up stranded on Gilligan's Island (what are the odds?!!). There, the imposter konks Mr. Howell on the head with a coconut, changes clothes with him, and attempts to continue his masquerade as the millionaire. Evil twins are mysteriously drawn to the Island, as both Gilligan and Ginger also meet their doppelgangers. Look for evil twin episodes on Lost in the fourth season. Wasn't Hurley reading a manuscript, titled: "Bad Twin?"

Ghost a Go-Go - A ghost appears on the island and tries to scare the Castaways off. The monster could be a ghost... no wait, it’s black smoke.

The Friendly Physician - A mad scientist lands on the island and takes the Castaways to his castle ... on a nearby island … to perform experiments on them. A member of the Hanso Foundation, no doubt. The nearby island is Station Seven.

Meet the Meteor - A huge meteor lands on the island, causing everything nearby to age very rapidly. Could this be the source of the strange magnetic forces on the Island?

Pass the Vegetables Please - Gilligan finds a crate of radioactive vegetable seeds. The plants grow quickly and grossly misshapen, but the Castaways are so hungry for new items in their diet that they consume them quickly. The plants, when eaten, give the castaways super-human powers. Apparently, Ethan liked his spinach!

Voodoo - A witch doctor makes voodoo dolls from the Castaways' personal objects, which he has stolen from their huts. Yes, it most definitely could be voodoo on Lost.

And Then There Were None - One by one, all of the Castaways mysteriously disappear. And just like Hurley, it is up to Gilligan save them!

Gilligan's Personal Magnetism - Lightning strikes Gilligan during Skipper and Gilligan's bowling tournament, and his stone bowling ball becomes molecularly attached to him. The Professor tries to help Gilligan, but ends up causing him to become invisible. More strange forces on the Island. Look for a lightning strike during the next Island golf tournament.

Splashdown - The Professor determines that a manned space craft will pass over the island, and attempts to fashion a telegraph machine. It circles every 108 minutes! (The space craft, not the telegraph machine.)

High Man on the Totem Pole - Gilligan and the Skipper find an ancient Kupaki totem pole that is topped with a head that looks just like Gilligan. It's as though the Island were expecting Gilligan to arrive someday. Like it's testing him somehow. He's done everything it's asked . . .

The Secret of Gilligan's Island - Gilligan discovers some ancient stone tablets that the Professor thinks may contain the secret of getting them off the island. On Lost this “stone tablet” is the mural on the wall inside the hatch.
