OliverPremise: After almost suffocating to death in his cousin Peter’s magic act, Oliver is gifted with “The Twist” — a power that lets him see dead people and fight the forces of darkness.

Oliver’s catchphrase: “Nobody believes a kid in glasses!”

During the final season of The Brady Bunch, in a desperate effort to bump up the show’s flagging cute-kid quotient, Sherwood Schwartz cast young Robbie Rist as the kids’ naïve, eager-to-please cousin Oliver. Where, exactly, they got a cousin when no other relatives were ever mentioned is a mystery we won’t solve here, though rumors that Oliver was in fact a mystical key to unlock the barrier between dimensions have been largely debunked.

What we do know is this: Schwartz’s ploy was lost on the viewing public. They found the small, blonde boy with owlish glasses and a bowl cut creepy rather than endearing. Schwartz, the consummate showman, responded with characteristic practicality: “He creeps ‘em out, huh?” he said. “Alright, let’s roll with that.” *

The pilot for Oliver’s Twist (”The Glass Half Full”) was one of the most chilling things I’ve ever seen. It started to turn cheesy almost immediately, however, with the campy, Satan-themed episode “Hotel California.” I would say it jumped the shark with the “Reese’s Pieces” episode, but it really rebounded with “Tiger Tiger Burning Bright.” I mean, the final scene of that episode moved me to tears! It’s a shame this show was cancelled so soon as it did seem to be finding the right mix of humor, horror and emotion there towards the end. Who knows where they would have gone had they stayed on the air?
